The feud between PGA Tour and LIV Golf continues. But at least as far as participation in the majors is concerned, the LIV golfers are not disadvantaged by their participation in the controversial tour. Now the PGA Championship also allows their participation.
The PGA of America announced on Wednesday that LIV Golf members will be able to participate in the 2023 PGA Championship, the second major tournament of the golf year. The tournament will be held May 18-21 at Oak Hill in Rochester, NY.
Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America, acknowledged that while the dispute between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf is ongoing, he stressed that the goal of the PGA Championship is to host a competitive tournament with a reasonably strong field.
“Our decisions are always based on what is in the best interests of the PGA of America and conducting the best championship possible,” said Waugh.
“Unfortunately, the current split in professional golf does not bode well for the sport and the future of the game. We hope that there will be a resolution soon. In the meantime, as always, we will remain focused on our mission of advancing the game and improving the lives of our Improving members who work so hard to impact millions of people every day.”
PGA Championship: LIV Golfers Phil Mickelson and Cameron Smith Were Already Eligible
Interesting in the course of this announcement: Many of the members of LIV Golf were already eligible to participate in the PGA Championships due to existing exception categories: Phil Mickelson for example as a former champion, Cameron Smith as last year’s British Open winner and Mito Pereira and Brendan Steele as Top 15 finishers from last year’s PGA rankings.
A new exception category for the 105th PGA Championship was added as part of Wednesday’s announcement. The top three players in the so-called International Federation Ranking List are invited to participate. This is a ranking of players from the Asian Tour, the Japan Golf Tour, the PGA Tour of Australasia and the Sunshine Tour of South Africa.
PGA Championship: New Exception Category Should Give More International Talent A Chance to Participate
Seth Waugh justifies this innovation with the promotion of international talent, which has often flown under the radar: “This new category,” says Waugh, “will help identify up-and-coming international players who may not have had the opportunity to develop their talent to show in the cauldron of a major championship.”
Incidentally, the R&A, the British golf association that hosts the British Open, issued a very similar statement on Tuesday. This said LIV Golf League players will be allowed to play this summer’s British Open at Royal Liverpool.
LIV Golfers Will Probably Be Allowed to Participate in All Majors This Year
But before “The Open” the other three majors of the golf season take place. Masters and US Open have previously announced that LIV golfers will be eligible to participate in their respective tournaments. Now also the PGA Championship, in whose 156-player field there will also be players from the LIV Golf League. The final list of participants will be determined on May 10th.
The NFL can be seen on RTL in the future. After more than ten years, ProSieben and Sat.1 have to hand over the TV rights to the Cologne-based private broadcaster. NFL Germany boss Dr. Alexander Steinforth gives the reasons for the surprising change.
The NFL will play two games in Germany in 2023. An encounter will certainly take place in Frankfurt/Main. The Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots are there. This is how you get tickets for both games.
The NFL will host two football games in Germany this year. At the moment it looks like Munich might get nothing and the games of the Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots will both be played in Frankfurt/Main.
