Thomas Pieters is taking part, this Friday, in his first tournament on the LIV at the Mayakoba tournament which is played on the El Camaleon course in Mexico. The Antwerp player, who gave in to the sirens of the dissident circuit just a few days ago, has finally explained his decision. “I got a call last week asking if I was interested in replacing the injured Hudson Swafford. I reflected with my family. It was not an easy choice but I took the opportunity. I had already considered playing on the LIV last year but circumstances did not allow it. This time, I started,” he confided.
Pieters is aware of the potential consequences of his choice, in particular at the level of his non-selection in the Ryder Cup. “But I’m still hopeful that a compromise can be found and I’m in touch with Captain Luke Donald…”
Like the other rounds, the Mayakoba tournament (48 players and three days of competition) is endowed with 25 million dollars, including 4 for the winner alone.
