Bulgarian Parliament Approves EUR3.6 Bn Aid Package for Ukraine

Bulgaria’s National Assembly officially approves € 3.6 billion aid package for Ukraine, reinforcing their role in supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.

On 14 December, Bulgaria’s National Assembly officially approved an agreement with the European Commission, endorsing the allocation of € 3.6 billion in micro-financial aid to Ukraine, Novinite reports.

This marks the second phase of planned assistance. The ratification received strong support, with 116 MPs voting in favor, 48 opposed it, and 6 abstained. The agreement entails Bulgaria providing guarantees totaling € 16,654,646.

During the session, differing opinions emerged, including criticism from Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov, who questioned the allocation of funds to Ukraine and raised concerns about domestic priorities.

This assistance seeks to bolster the support for Ukraine amidst ongoing challenges, sparking debates within Bulgaria’s political landscape, according to Novinite.

Earlier, the Defense Committee of the Bulgarian Parliament backed the provision of unusable, outdated, or surplus man-portable air defense systems (MPADS) and anti-aircraft missiles of various types to Ukraine.

Also, Bulgaria’s parliament had overridden President Roumen Radev’s veto on the agreement between Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry and Ukraine’s Defence Ministry on Bulgaria supplying 100 Soviet-era armored personnel carriers to Ukraine, ratified by Parliament.

The Bulgarian parliament had also agreed to provide Ukraine with Bulgarian airspace for F-16 aircraft training.
